You can read the whole story here, but in summary, it says:

A WEEKLY dose of oily fish may help prevent the most common cause of blindness in old age, scientists say.

Eating herring, mackerel and tuna – packed with health-busting omega 3 fatty acids – reduces the risk of age-related macular degeneration by 60 per cent.

Around 500,000 Britons each year suffer AMD which stops the eyes from making out fine details, leaving victims unable to recognise people’s faces or read.

But new US research found that regular fish eaters tend to have lower rates of AMD than people who rarely eat fish.

The results boost the theory that superfood omega 3 fatty acids found in large concentrations in oily fish may affect the development of AMD. Cathy Yelf, of the Macular Disease Society, said: “This is another piece of the jigsaw.

“We are gradually getting a clearer picture of the part diet and general health plays in macular degeneration and we tell people to ‘eat for your eyes’ by including lots of fruit and green leafy vegetables in the diet as well as oily fish.”

In a study, those who ate one or more servings of oily fish each week were 60 per cent less likely to have advanced AMD than those who averaged less than a serving a week.

So get ordering your fish today at our online shop to enjoy the huge health benefits of fish.

One of our special offers in May is on our succulent King Scallops.

King Scallops special offer

Scallops are a popular type of shellfish in both Eastern and Western cooking and are characterized by having two types of meat in one shell…

The adductor muscle, called “scallop” which is white and meaty, and the roe, called “coral”, which is red or white and soft.

Both parts are edible and in Europe they are eaten in their entirety like oysters. In the U.S. however, when a scallop is prepared, usually only the white part - the adductor muscle - is used, while the other parts of the scallop are discarded.

Scallops are commonly sautéed in butter, or else breaded and deep fried. Their flavour is sweet and delicate and so best served with something that will not overpower their subtle flavour. They go really well with light semi-dry white wines.

Simply pan fry them in butter, or try one of our recipes:

Barbequed Scallops Wrapped in Bacon and Sage
Devilled Scallops
Pan Fried King Scallops with Tarragon
Pan Fried Scallops and Prawns with Mango Dipping Sauce
Scallop Chowder

Our current stock comes from Cornish day boats and the quality is by far the very best available on the market.

Now the chocolatey indulgences of Easter are over, many people take a new look at their diets. After all - the summer holidays are just around the corner and the thought of donning the bikini or speedos can fill the bravest of hearts with fear!

The first cutback in the Spring diet is often fat. But not all fat is bad for you. To the contrary, some is very, very good for you. And vital in fact for good health.

Thankfully, there are some very tasty ways to get this healthy stuff. Oil rich fish - such as salmon, mackerel, sea bass and trout - contains Omega 3 fatty acids which is a type of polyunsaturated fat that protects the heart and circulation. This lessens the risk of heart disease by reducing blood clots and inflammation, improving blood vessel elasticity, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood fats and boosting ‘good’ cholesterol.

Omega 3 is also important in the development of the brain - in particular a baby’s brain. It is also reported that super omega 3 fatty acids can raise levels of the brain chemical serotonin and so can help to ease depression.

The list of benefits of Omega 3 go on and on. And to help you on the way, we have some great deals on our website. With free delivery on orders over £30 and organic salmon fillets now at just £4.95 (down from £7.45), there has never been a better time to start to add fish to your regular diet.

It’s not just about chocolate and fluffy bunnies you know! For instance, an old Roman Catholic tradition involves eating fish on Good Friday. This is still recognised to this day by many people of the Christian faith - and beyond.

Good Friday used to be seen as a fasting day where people were expected to go without the usual luxuries to acknowledge the sacrifice that Jesus made. As meat is seen as one such luxury, it was not allowed to be eaten and so fish was the dish of the day.

As with most traditions, this is not followed as rigorously as it used to be, but many people still do eat fish on Good Friday.

For the record, we think you should eat fish on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday……

We have some great deals on at the moment, so whether you want to follow tradition, or just enjoy some delicious, fresh fish every day of the week, visit our online shop or browse our tasty recipes.
